Abstract

Sustainable engineering is becoming increasingly important for reducing the world's carbon footprint and utilising resources more efficiently. This paper examines new developments and ongoing challenges that hinder progress in implementing green technologies. Hybrid microgrids that use both solar and wind power, hydrogen energy for transportation and industry, and advanced energy storage systems are changing the way energy is delivered. Digital tools, such as AI, blockchain, and the Internet of Things, enhance system optimisation, transparency, and predictive management even further. These changes help reduce emissions, increase efficiency, and promote circular economy practices. However, high capital costs, dependence on rare raw materials, integration issues, and cybersecurity risks still hinder large-scale adoption. The paper demonstrates how sustainable technologies can have a measurable impact on the environment and the economy by examining case studies from academia, industry, and global initiatives. To make the future more resilient and accelerate progress toward a low-carbon, resource-efficient future, sustainable engineering must focus on integrating renewable sources, expanding hydrogen production, and driving digital transformation.
